N97 – Tainted Love – Forgiven but not Forgoten – A Little Rant

The many of you who know me from twitter, Nokiausers.net, or here will know full well that I have had my fair share of problems with my Nokia N97, resulting in countless hard resets, formats blah blah blah, but today, my N97 has let me down once again, and this time, its the final straw.

I have given my N97 its fair share of chances too.  Why have I given it so many chances?  I wanted to love it, I really did, I do love its form factor, but its now let me down once too often, and frankly, I’ve had enough now, and thought I would share a spooky experience i had earlier when my N97 started acting up.

14/03/2010

Earlier today, I was connected to my White N97-1 with my Nokia BH-604 Bluetooth stereo headset, listening to my favorite tunes, when my N97 started becoming so slow, and laggy through the menu’s, it eventually froze on me, although it had continued to play my music, and this is where it gets real spooky,

Music player set to randomly choose songs as my default setting choice, after the freeze, music play stopped for around 30 seconds, I still kept my headset on, monitoring how long this freeze would take, my N97 decided to play Depeche Mode, "Tainted Love".  If you actually listen to the lyrics of this song, they can pretty well cover my feelings for my once loved N97, so much so, its uncanny.

Then the next song came started to play, a sign maybe? No kidding, the next song was "Forgiven, but not Forgotten" by the Cores. When my own Nokia shows me signs like this, what does one do?  I have already had to remove the battery twice today due freezes, and not wanting to go down the resetting, and formatting route again.  I have lost count at the times I have done this before, and its really once too often for me now.  I have given my N97 a damn good fair share of my patients, but with those running thin over the last few days, today was the final straw, and I have decided to sell it.  What will I get next I hear you ask?  We shall see.

It’s such a crying shame, it really is.  The form-factor of the N97 is amazing, with it’s hinge mechanism being one of beauty, and superb design, but a combination of stretching S60 5th Edition to Touch, an under powered CPU, tied with insufficient Phone Memory, and RAM, the N97 is like a Ferrari on the outside, but with an Austin Mini 950cc engine inside.

I have Forgiven Nokia for the sheer oversight of this flawed Flagship Nokia handset, the N97, but hell, I have not forgotten.  The sad thing is, I’m not alone in this thinking either, as I read almost daily on twitter from N97 owners who feel outdone, robbed, lead down the garden path, being sold something that clearly does not do as promised. (Take the Transitions of the widgets in the Original N97 Promotional video below for example).

Flogging-a-dead-horseNokia have lost a lot of loyal followers during the N97 transition, with new firmware updates being released for the flagship, trying to fix something that cannot be fixed with no amount of firmware fixes, its flogging a dead horse.!

This leads me to something that I would love Nokia to implement, and at least show the end uers, consumers, and Nokia fans that they do care about us, and offer some kind of discount on the next Nokia Flagship device, be it a Symbian^4, or MeeGo device, how difficult could it be to offer people a discount?  Not that difficult really in my opinion, all they would have to do, is ask for proof of purchase, which would be simple if purchased from Nokia directly.

Do you own/have owned an N97?  If you do/have, please share your experiences with it, and please let us know if you are/were a normal user, or a power user.

Tell me what problems you have had with your N97, what lets you down the most with the device, what you love about it too would be useful to know. Please also share your experiences with any hardware related issues you have experienced too, camera lens scratches, poor GPS etc, and if you successfully got these repaired under warranty.

    Hi

Just like yourselves, I too haver been badly let down by the N97 but I have decided to take on Nokia.
I wrote them an E Mail detailing why I would like a refund of over £300 (to buy myself out of my contract) and as we speak they have my phone. The deal is that they need to fix what you have detailed above, Low RAM, under powered CPu etc or they pay me and they have AGREED! Well, I say agreed, they will send me a new N97 to sell so I can pay off the contract .

You must e mail nokia care, they are aware of the problem and keep stating that there Vice President agrees with us users. Check out his admission on you tube.

Good luck and keep me updated.

Thanks Lee, I know Nokia are aware of these shortcomings, as they have publically admitted it in a video interview recently, however, I was personally aware of this before the video, but its always nice to get an official response.

    Lee,
If you could publish the text of this email we could use it as a template…

Obviously remove any detail specific to you…

    Ta,
    D

    @Dave Cozens

Will publish the e mail in the next few days. Key to success is at alltimes, be nice, understanding but keep relating to the Vice Presidents statement and then there is no comeback. BE helpful though, offer to be a beta tester but remain calm which trust me is the hardest lol

Sadly but true, i am totally agreee. The thing here its i am sad. Really dissapointed. Believe me my first nokia was the N93 and i was the king of the world. After i got a n95. Really good phone, good camera and i mean good camera. in the n97 the photos with the flash in the n97 are ugly. A light over the left side always always. Now my battery is killing me. I have to go again to the nokia store and get a new one. No good apps in the OVI Store. Not like the iphone. I hate iphone.

What else?..oh yeah i am also a developer. Dissapointing and frustrated seeing other phones like Nexus One with flash player 10.1…. and Nokia…nothing.

    Where to begin?

I was one of those that pre-ordered the N97. I loved it for about a month and then like everyone else grew to hate the device. Then f/w 21.2.045 came out and for a time there my love affair had been rekindled and even wrote about it in a blog at http://wp.me/pOhA7-3a

Of course that love affair didn’t last. Not necessarily because of the N97 itself, but because I got a N900. The build quality and responsiveness of the N900 is just unmatched. As a power user that wants a device that accesses the internet and is a phone on the side the N900 is perfect for me. Heck I rarely make calls. It’s all about email and text conversations. The only two things “wrong” with the N900 are that I cannot transfer the music I got from Ovi/Nokia Music to the device, and Ovi Maps for the N900 sucks (no other word for it).

I actually picked up my old N97 this past Monday and started playing with it. Within 30 minutes or so I couldn’t take it anymore. The build quality is so poor compared to the N900 and yet that isn’t what drove me nuts. It was the lack of response from the touch screen and the lack of speed when anything was loaded. I’m sticking with my N900 for quite some time, or at least until MeeGo devices are released and mature.
